The 7 Stairs Canyon is a gorge carved into the Jurassic limestones in the western Piatra Mare Mountains in Brasov. It’s a place where people often come to enjoy nature and spend a day away from the hectic city.
About the 7 Stairs Canyon
The length is 160 meters and the difference in level is 58 meters, at an altitude of almost 1000 meters. The gorge has seven steps with heights ranging from 2 to 15 meters. They turn into cascades when the volume of water in the Stone Valley stream is high. The trail is easy and no special equipment is needed, which is why this is one of the most popular places to visit near Brasov.
The 7 stairs canyon is spectacular. The seven staircases carved into the Jurassic limestones preserve traces of the evolution of the entire massif. They are based on erosion potholes, and the evolution of the valley took place along the complicated route of a network of faults and dikes.
Legend says that the hike up here is a test for women who want to get married. Another legend says that the young men of the village put their girlfriends to two tests, one of which was a hike up the canyon to test their physical endurance. Once they reached the top together, they would stay for a night, and if they didn’t fight, they were destined to be together for life. Here, the air is ozonated, and that’s because the canyon is over 1000 meters above sea level.
